Written, directed, and personally financed by Robert Duvall, The Apostle was the culmination of a 14-year effort on the part of its creator, who also stars as the dynamic, God-fearing Texas preacher Euliss "Sonny" Dewey. Vibrantly authentic with its use of real gospel preachers and extras carefully selected from parishes of the deep South, the film treats its complicated characters with the kind of compassion and moral complexity mainstream Hollywood wouldn't dare muster. This is especially true in the case of Sonny, who responds to his wife's infidelity with a crime of passion that sends him on a new and uncharted quest for redemption. Under the assumed identity of "The Apostle E.F.," he settles in a tiny Louisiana town to revive an old church, where he undergoes a transformation of spirit and purpose that enlivens his community. But will the law catch up to him? Does he deserve to be punished? Fueled by Duvall's powerhouse performance, The Apostle refuses to praise or condemn its fascinating central character, leaving the proper degree of forgiveness up to the viewer. Further graced with superb performances by Farrah Fawcett, Miranda Richardson, and Billy Bob Thornton, the film is clearly Duvall's labor of love. --Jeff Shannon
The Apostle! Glory! The best ever!Reviewed by Elizabeth L. Edmonds, 2010-02-04
This movie got very little publicity and was actually recommended to me by a minister. I rented it and watched it over and over again. For those of us who grew up in the South and share stories of revivals and tent meetings this brings back a lot of memories. It's a great story of personal redemption tinged with pain, sadness and a little humor. You'll find yourself wanting to get on your feet and do a little "shoutin' and singin'". Robert Duvall is totally believable in this role as the evangelist.
Very good filmReviewed by ENAMOURED, 2009-10-20
I love this movie, the love of the Christian Faith how God can save even the worst of sinners to repentance. God bless Robert Duvall. an awesome man of God to be inspired by Jesus to write such a beautiful movie.
Nice Performance, Boring StoryReviewed by Anony Mous, 2009-09-03
I found the plot extremely repetitious and boring. Nothing much
happens except a lot of preaching and good intentions. Some nice
acting by Duvall. But I couldn't believe in him as a genuine man of
God because he showed no deep emotional remorse over his killing
the pastor or over the abusive way he treated his wife. He just
runs away and tries to start a new life. This showed he was a
coward, unready to take responsibility for his base actions. If he
had any sense of conscience, he would have given himself up to the
law and accepted his punishment for his vicious act. The movie was
much too long.
The Apostle VHSReviewed by FanofJuneCarterCash, 2009-08-14
Original thought on how evangelists love God most and their
neighbor as themselves while flesh will be flesh and where there's
flesh there's problems....the classic appearance is Johnny Cash's
real wife, June Carter Cash, playing the wife of the apostle, the
woman spurned, just
fed up with The Apostle having access to so many other
than her on his evangelistic excursions....every
preacher must have to struggle with what Robert
Duvall heroically depicts as The Apostle....a must
see for anybody who loves God most and their neighbor
as oneself and struggling to keep satisfying
self as third to serve God from the heart God is first, neighbor is
second, self third place....in short....an excellent choice to help
anyone
think about how a person can love God most yet constantly
struggling with the normal desire God has build into the human
heart, fleshly desires.

make the movie and for his fabulous acting.
